Cover story on Chicago-based artist Jack Perno for New Orleans-based Art+Design Magazine. Perno was 65 years old at the time of this interview, and here is what he said about going to art school during Vietnam War: “By the time my year came around, they started closing the loopholes. You couldn’t come in and say, ‘Oh I’m gay, and I take drugs.’ They’d say, ‘OK, go over there and stand with all the other gay drug-takers.’ If you went full-time to college, you kept a certain grade point average, no interruptions, you could hold your deferment. The motivation was study or die.”
